Review: Puppy-Safe Waterless 2-in-1 Shampoo

I was anxious to test the Puppy-Safe Waterless 2-in-1 Shampoo from Planet Dog. Puppies can be very sensitive to detergents and cleaners which can cause skin allergies. And just like human babies, attract dirt and given half an opportunity will bring dirt and nasty grunge inside the house after they’ve rolled in the muck.

While nothing beats a thorough dunking and regular puppy bathing, the in between times may do well with simple touch ups. For pups that only need spot cleaning, or when you have difficulty managing a full bath—maybe you’re traveling—a water-less alternative is a good option.

To test the product, I used this on my adult dog Magic’s legs and paws after he’d been playing and tackling his toys out in the wet pasture. I first wiped down his muddy paws with paper towels, and then sprayed liberally with the Waterless Shampoo and worked in with a wash cloth. Most of the grim came off with the first application and a second one removed the rest and left him smelling fresh as well. It would take a good bit more of the product to address longer, thicker furred areas of the coat, of course. But for short hair areas of a pup’s body that typically collects the most grim (paws, tummy, messy food on face) the product should work very well.

Very young pups shouldn’t be bathed, either, or you risk a chill. And in the case of puppies that become sick from diarrhea or vomiting, getting them wet is not recommended, either.

The Waterless Shampoo product comes in a generous 16 ounce plastic spray bottle. Pleasing aroma also helps deodorize your puppy but isn’t such a strong odor to offend the dog’s nose. The product is formulated with a blend of natural ingredients including coconut, almond and oatmeal, known for their skin soothing and hair conditioning properties.

The directions are easily to use. Spray the clear liquid liberally onto the dry or damp furry coat, or onto a clean cloth, and then brush or rub it into the puppy’s fur. Use a clean towel to finish drying the puppy. That removes the grime along with the spray from the coat. The product is mild enough it can be used daily.

I’m already a fan of the Planet Dog toy products and the company’s commitment to remaining environmentally friendly. In fact, 2% of your purchase of the Waterless Shampoo funds canine service dog programs.

The Puppy-Safe Waterless 2-in-1 Shampoo is a good addition to your puppy’s grooming equipment and supplies. It works just as well on adult dogs, and has also been labeled safe to use on cats and ferrets. The product works best for spot cleans and surface grime. But it would also work well to use on clean pups in between baths as a coat conditioner and deodorizer.
