We don't want to think about it, but it happens. When I still worked as a vet tech, a couple brought a young nine month old shepherd pup to the clinic. He was perfectly healthy, gorgeous, friendly--and was there to be euthanized.
Why? Because his elderly owner had died and nobody wanted him. I still cry when I think of it.
