My heart goes out to all those who have--and continue to--suffer from the hurricane. No matter how well our preparations for disasters, the reality can surprise us in nasty ways. Thank heavens, there are savvy and caring folks who already have pet rescue operations ready to roll, to help both humans and animals impacted by the most recent tragedy.
I'm on the road this weekend but wanted to get this information out to everyone to share as needed. I will update as soon as I can. According to an email I received from the American Humane Association, "An estimated 60 million people and 30 million animals including 14.5 million dogs, 15.3 million cats, and 1.5 million horses were caught in the path of killer Hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of thousands are still without heat or light and many beloved pets have been lost or left behind when their families had to flee to shelters that don't take animals. American Humane Association's 82-foot mobile command center and Red Star Rescue team are on the ground right now to rescue, shelter, comfort, and reunite frightened animals with their families."
The Red Paw Emergency pet relief team is on the ground in PA, learn more here.
